Gold medal winner at Lord Harris Court
Michael Holdstock, a 78 year-old resident at RMBI Care Co. Home Lord Harris Court, in Berkshire, has recently completed a 22-mile sponsored walk for ‘Sport Relief – Move 22’, an initiative from Comic Relief.
The money raised, over £200, will help to tackle inequality, improve mental health and help young people to survive and thrive. This goal motivated Michael to succeed with his challenge, which he completed by daily walks supported by the Home’s Activities Coordinator.
To celebrate this outstanding achievement, Lord Harris Court got in touch and invited Commonwealth judo gold medal winner Megan Fletcher. The famous judoka, who studied at The Emmbrook School, in Wokingham, presented Michael with his winner medal, which was engraved as a memento of his impressive contribution. “I will be quicker when I tackle my next challenge as I will do it wearing my Speedos!” he says with a laugh.
Sharon Fletcher, Activities Coordinator at Lord Harris Court and judoka Megan Fletcher’s cousin, states: “Michael’s commitment to raising money for ‘Sports Relief – Move 22’ has been a marvellous achievement. We walked many laps of the local surroundings and logged every mile each day. The public, family, friends, residents and the staff of Lord Harris Court all encouraged Michael and supported his challenge.
“I am very proud of Michael, who never gave up and was up and ready to go every morning. We both enjoy keeping fit and, at the same time, helping others do so.”
Judo gold medal winner Megan Fletcher says: “It was an honour to present Michael with his medal today. A lot of dedication and hard work went into walking his 22 miles with Sharon. It was lovely to meet him and congratulate him on his achievement. What a legend!”
Megan Fletcher’s next visit will take place next year. She is planning to talk about her career and bring along her newest accomplishment: a baby due in January. By then, she will be visiting a brand new care home set in the grounds of the existing Lord Harris Court, whose name is yet to be revealed.
